Andy Taylor, founding member and guitarist of Duran Duran, shared that a revolutionary cancer drug has significantly extended his life. The talented musician, who is now 62 years old, disclosed his diagnosis of stage 4 prostate cancer in November of last year, although he was initially diagnosed in 2015. Taylor revealed that a scientist approached him with an offer for a remarkable treatment known as Lutetium-177, a targeted nuclear medicine that exclusively targets cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. He recently completed his first round of this drug six weeks ago, and he expressed his gratitude for its effectiveness in killing stage four cancer in his bones and ultimately prolonging his life for another five years.
The US Food and Drug Administration approved Lutetium-177 in March 2022. It has been proven to not only enhance prostate cancer survival rates and improve the quality of life but also delay the progression of the disease, according to the esteemed University of Chicago Medical Center.
Taylor’s health had been deteriorating steadily before he decided to give this groundbreaking drug a try, and he felt as though he had been placed on a metaphorical blacklist. In order to make his diagnosis public, Taylor’s bandmates Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, and Roger Taylor delivered a heartfelt letter during their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction speech in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, Taylor was unable to attend the ceremony, but Le Bon kindly read the letter on his behalf.
In his letter, Taylor acknowledged that countless families have been affected by this devastating disease and expressed his gratitude towards his band, their incredible fans, and the prestigious accolade they had received. Despite receiving exceptional treatment, he did mention a recent setback, admitting that he would be pushing his limits both physically and mentally. However, he emphasized that this should not diminish the remarkable achievements and enduring success of the band over their impressive 44-year career.
The induction ceremony was meant to be a joyous reunion for Duran Duran, where Taylor played guitar from 1980 to 1986 and again from 2001 to 2006. He contributed his talent to the band’s first three albums, which featured popular hits like “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf.”
