And Just Like That’: Cynthia Nixon Takes the Director’s Seat for the Latest Episodes

Cynthia Nixon, known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in “Sex and the City,” has directed two episodes of the new series, “And Just Like That,” that harken back to the classic elements of the original show. In Episode 5, we see the characters embarking on dating adventures and encountering various misadventures. Carrie accidentally collides with a bicyclist, leading to a casual relationship that reveals the man’s dedication to his job and annoying business partner. Meanwhile, Seema and Nya successfully pick up men at a bar, but Seema’s encounter doesn’t quite go as planned.

Nixon enjoyed directing these episodes, particularly the scenes where the women go out on the prowl at the bar. These episodes also feature a fashion-forward snowstorm, showcasing impressive outfits worn by the characters.

This isn’t Nixon’s first time directing for the series. She previously directed an episode in the previous season and is thrilled to have the opportunity to direct again. Nixon, an Emmy and Tony award-winning actor, has also been involved in activism and even ran for governor of New York.

When the idea to direct television was presented to Nixon by Sarah Jessica Parker and showrunner Michael Patrick King, she initially felt terrified but viewed it as a gift. She found support in the cast and crew, feeling like they were rooting for her success.

To prepare for her directorial debut, Nixon took a class for first-time TV directors offered by the Directors Guild of America. She also received guidance from Michael Engler, a longtime TV director who directed episodes of the original “Sex and the City” and now works with Nixon on “The Gilded Age.”

Reflecting on her career as an actor, Nixon recalled working with renowned director Miloš Forman, who she considers her favorite film director. She admired his ability to guide actors to deliver real and grounded performances. Nixon strives to achieve the same authenticity in her work.

With these episodes, Nixon has discovered her passion for directing and looks forward to taking on more projects. She finds it challenging but rewarding to work alongside talented artists and believes in empowering them to bring their best to the table.

Don’t miss “And Just Like That” airing on Thursdays on Max.
