An Epochal Occurrence at Stormont

The Northern Ireland Assembly elections happening today are of significant importance. Recent opinion polls indicate that Sinn Fein is likely to become the largest party at Stormont and have the opportunity to nominate Northern Ireland’s first minister.

During the campaign, Sinn Fein has been downplaying its desires for a united Ireland and focusing more on cost of living issues. However, winning these elections would not necessarily further their cause as the Unionist vote is divided, and moderate parties like the Alliance Party are gaining support.

Despite this, the leader of the DUP, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, has refused to serve under a Sinn Fein first minister and stated that his party will not join a power-sharing government until the Northern Ireland Protocol is abandoned.

So far, negotiations with Brussels regarding the Protocol have not made much progress. The Foreign Secretary’s hopes of reaching a deal earlier this year were shattered due to the European Union’s stubbornness.

The government has the option to invoke Article 16 of the Protocol or introduce legislation that allows the UK to unilaterally override certain parts of it. Regardless of the approach, this unresolved issue from Brexit cannot be allowed to persist. The current situation is clearly unsustainable.
