An App in This City Ensures Beach Harassers are Kept at Bay

Women in a resort community in France have launched an app called Safer Plage (Safer Beach) to combat harassment on the beach. The app has already been downloaded over 1,300 times since its launch in Marseille. It allows users to choose from three options: “I’m being bothered,” “I’m being harassed,” and “I’m in danger.” When an alert is sent, a pair of beach mediators is dispatched to the location through geolocation tracking. The mediators, who have been trained to handle a wide range of situations, including domestic violence, aim to shame and expose the harasser rather than make arrests. The app was developed by the nonprofit organization Orane, in response to a survey that revealed nearly 40% of young women aged 18 to 34 have experienced harassment on the beach. Sexual harassment offenders in France can face up to two years in prison and a significant fine. The Safer Plage app provides women with a sense of security and allows them to defend themselves more easily.
