The Latest Crisis in Israel and Gaza: Amy Schumer’s Controversial Posts
The ongoing crisis in Israel and Gaza has caused rifts within communities and friendships. However, one thing many of us can agree on is that comedian Amy Schumer needs to take a break from her phone. In a recent Instagram post, Schumer called herself “the most successful female comedian of all time,” showcasing her clear disconnection from reality. This disconnection is further evident in her numerous pro-Israel posts, where she has defended Israel’s mistreatment of Palestinians in Gaza, refused to listen to criticism, and used her influence to belittle others.
While we should generally ignore the opinions of most celebrities during such complex conflicts, it is worth examining Schumer’s posts because they highlight the double standards and lack of accountability for the dehumanization of Palestinians and Muslims in America. By blaming all Gazans instead of targeting Hamas, the militant organization responsible for war crimes and the deaths of 1,400 Israelis, Schumer perpetuates harmful stereotypes that equate Muslims, Palestinians, and Arabs with extremism.
Actress Asia Jackson pointed out the hypocrisy in how Schumer’s comments are treated compared to others. Jackson tweeted, “It’s crazy how Bella & Gigi Hadid had to carefully choose their words, while Amy Schumer says ‘Gazans are rapists’ and still has a career.” This uneven treatment is also evident in the consequences faced by those who speak up for Palestinian rights. Writers like Michael Eisen and David Velasco have lost their jobs, and student groups and authors face online harassment, leading to a chilling effect on advocating for Palestinians.
Even celebrities like Gigi and Bella Hadid, whose father’s family were Palestinian refugees, have endured death threats and doxxing after expressing support for Palestine. On the other hand, comedian Sarah Silverman faced no backlash when she shared a post endorsing Israel cutting off basic necessities to Palestinians until hostages are released.
When Asia Jackson criticized Schumer’s comments, Schumer responded by accusing her of antisemitism and claimed Jackson was uneducated about Jewish history. Schumer’s attempt to lecture a Black woman about feeling unsafe in America while touting her own privilege is both audacious and misguided.
Schumer also selectively used quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to support her argument while ignoring his condemnation of white supremacy and abuses of power. However, MLK’s daughter, Bernice King, reminded Schumer of the bigger picture and called for an end to the bombing of Palestinians, the release of hostages, and true peace and justice.
Despite receiving criticism, Schumer appears to remain oblivious to the problematic nature of her posts. However, unlike others who face repercussions for supporting Palestinian rights, Schumer will likely weather the storm and continue to express her views without significant consequences. Unfortunately, it seems there is little cost for hating on Palestinians and Muslims, while those who advocate for their rights face harsh backlash.
