Aug. 1 (UPI) — In a significant development, Tiger Woods has joined the PGA Tour policy board. This move has resulted in the player directors outnumbering the independent directors, giving them more influence on future league matters. The most prominent of these matters is the proposed union with LIV Golf, a move that has been met with controversy.

In a news release from the PGA Tour, Woods expressed his honor at representing the players and emphasized the importance of their input in the Tour’s operations. He said, “This is a critical point for the Tour, and the players will do their best to make certain that any changes that are made in Tour operations are in the best interest of all Tour stakeholders, including fans, sponsors, and players.”

A group of 41 golfers, including Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Scottie Scheffler, recently sent a letter to PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, expressing their desire for more input and control over the future of the Tour. One of their specific requests was for Woods to be appointed to the board.

The Tour has expanded the board from 10 members to 11 to accommodate Woods as the sixth player director. The other player directors on the board include McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Charley Hoffman, Peter Malnati, and Webb Simpson.

In addition to the player directors, there are independent directors and the PGA of America director who also serve on the board. One empty independent director seat remains, and the Tour plans to announce a replacement soon.

The players expressed their gratitude to commissioner Monahan for addressing their concerns and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the Tour through these changes.

The proposed union between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour has been met with mixed responses. The announcement of the union in June caused backlash, with players criticizing the commissioner for not involving them in the decision-making process. In response, the Tour has committed to working with the player directors to ensure their involvement and approval in major decisions in the future.

Colin Nevill, a special advisor to the player directors, will also be kept informed about the negotiations with LIV Golf and will have access to all relevant documents and information. The player directors will have the authority to approve or decline any potential changes to the Tour as part of the ongoing discussions.
