In another blow to hopes of a forward-looking debate in the 2024 GOP primary, special counsel Jack Smith has recently filed fresh charges against Donald Trump regarding his attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. These charges seem to be strategically designed and timed to rally Republicans behind Trump.
This case adds to the two others, one relating to classified documents and the other being Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s Stormy Daniels hush-money prosecution. Additionally, there is an expected indictment in Georgia concerning Trump’s actions during the 2020 election.
We won’t delve into the specifics of the charges here, but it is important to note that none of them are clear-cut. While the classified documents charge is significant, it raises concerns about selective prosecution. As for Bragg’s case, it can be considered laughable.
Although we have criticized Trump for his denial of the 2020 election and his role in the Capitol Riot, Smith’s charges primarily rely on new and questionable legal theories.
Above all, many Republicans view these charges as political vendettas rather than a genuine pursuit of justice, especially in light of the Justice Department’s apparent efforts to suppress any meaningful investigation into Hunter Biden. Despite mounting evidence implicating President Joe Biden in possible misconduct, no special counsel has been appointed to handle the matter.
