American Cave Rescuer Trapped in Turkish Cave Calls for Urgent Help: A Hero’s Plea to Safeguard Lives

  • Mark Dickey, an American cave explorer and rescuer, fell ill during a research mission in a 3,000-foot-deep Turkish cave.
  • The Hungarian Cave Rescue Service reported that Dickey is currently experiencing gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • In a video update, Dickey stated that he is “alert” but still not fully healed on the inside.

A cave rescuer now needs rescuing himself — and he’s going to require a lot of help, he says.

Teams of emergency responders are currently working to extract Mark Dickey, a 40-year-old American cave explorer and rescuer, from a cave in southern Turkey, according to the European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA).

Dickey was conducting a research mission deep inside the Morca cave system when he fell ill with severe gastric pain, as reported by the ECRA on Thursday. The incident was reported on Saturday.

The Hungarian Cave Rescue Service has confirmed that Dickey is experiencing gastrointestinal bleeding. They have reached his location and provided blood transfusions, as reported by The Associated Press. However, he is unable to exit the cave on his own.

In a video update released by the Turkish government on Wednesday, Dickey stated that he is “alert” but “not healed on the inside yet.”

“I’m gonna need a lot of help to get out of here,” Dickey said. “This is often, in the caving world, a great opportunity to show just how well the international world can get together.”

Over 150 people are involved in the rescue operation, according to the Turkish Caving Federation. The narrow and winding passages of the cave present a significant challenge for the rescuers.

According to a GoFundMe page set up for the rescue teams, Dickey is not only a speleologist, but also a cave rescuer who has conducted expeditions in various karst areas around the world for many years. He serves as the secretary of the ECRA medical committee and instructs cave rescue organizations in the USA.
