American Airlines

pilots’ union announced on Thursday that they have agreed to an improved offer for a new labor contract. This comes less than two weeks after a more lucrative deal at United Airlines disrupted the voting process at American.

The revised preliminary agreement includes pay adjustments that align with United’s recent contract, which guarantees pilots approximately 40% raises over four years. It also matches the improvements in Delta Air Lines’ contract ratified in March. American CEO Robert Isom raised the company’s offer by around $1 billion last week.

“We acknowledge and appreciate the collaborative efforts of the Allied Pilots Association in reaching an updated four-year contract agreement for American’s pilots,” said American in a statement. “This is a contract we take pride in and one that our pilots truly deserve.”

Voting on the new deal for American’s pilots will commence in August.

This agreement reflects the ongoing trend in the transportation industry, as workers in various sectors seek higher wages and improved working conditions. The shortage of pilots has emboldened unions to negotiate for more substantial salary increases and other enhancements following the pandemic-induced negotiation stalemate.

Earlier this week, UPS and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters reached a preliminary labor agreement that raises pay for over 300,000 workers. This deal successfully averted a large-scale strike that could have had widespread repercussions on the U.S. economy. The workers will vote on this agreement next month.
