American Airlines Passenger Recounts Terrifying Ordeal of Plane Descending 18,600ft

  • An American Airlines flight experienced a rapid descent of 18,000 feet in just minutes due to a pressurization problem.
  • Passenger Harrison Hove reported a burning smell and the deployment of oxygen masks on the plane.
  • The airline stated that the situation did not require the plane to declare an emergency upon landing.

A passenger onboard an American Airlines flight experienced a terrifying incident when the plane suddenly dropped thousands of feet after a loud bang.

American Airlines Flight 5916, traveling from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Gainesville, Florida, on August 10, descended rapidly.

According to data from FlightAware, a flight-tracking website, the plane dropped 18,000 feet in just six minutes, approximately 43 minutes into the flight.

“I’ve flown a lot. This was scary. Kudos to our amazing flight crew – cabin staff and pilots on AmericanAir 5916,” tweeted Harrison Hove, an academic from Florida.

Hove also shared pictures of himself and fellow passengers wearing oxygen masks after the cabin apparently lost pressure.

“The photos cannot capture the burning smell, loud bang, or ear pops. Good to be on the ground,” he said.

In an interview with WBTV, Hove described how the burning smell had begun to spread throughout the aircraft.

“We started descending really fast, and once we began breathing, we could smell this burning odor, which made me very nervous,” explained Hove.

“The initial moments were truly frightening and unsettling because of the lack of information available,” Hove added.

American Airlines stated that no one was injured during the incident and that the plane did not need to declare an emergency upon landing in Gainesville.

A spokesperson for the airline informed Fox Business that the incident may have been caused by a pressurization issue.

“While in flight, the crew received an indication of a possible pressurization issue and immediately and safely descended to a lower altitude,” explained the spokesperson.

“We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience and commend our team for their professionalism,” the spokesperson concluded.
