American Airlines files lawsuit against Skiplagged travel site following teenager’s dismissal for utilizing discounted ticket

American Airlines has filed a lawsuit against Skiplagged Inc., a travel website that offers discounted tickets by taking advantage of a loophole in airline pricing. The airline’s lawsuit, filed in federal court in Fort Worth, Texas, alleges that Skiplagged engages in deceptive practices and threatens to cancel all tickets sold by the website. Skiplagged’s method, known as skiplagging or hidden-city ticketing, involves booking a flight with a layover and then leaving the plane during the layover. While skiplagging is not illegal, airlines argue that it violates their policies.

Earlier this month, American Airlines removed a 17-year-old passenger from a flight and banned him for three years after he attempted to use the skiplagging tactic to save money on a ticket from Gainesville, Florida to Charlotte, North Carolina, by listing New York City as the final destination. American claims that Skiplagged deceives consumers by presenting the tactic as a secret loophole. Additionally, the airline accuses Skiplagged of posing as an ordinary consumer to purchase tickets and warning customers not to disclose the arrangement to the airline. American also states that Skiplagged has never been authorized to resell its tickets.

In response to the lawsuit, Skiplagged has yet to comment. This is not the first time Skiplagged has faced legal action. United Airlines and online travel agency Orbitz previously sued Aktarer Zaman, the founder of Skiplagged, for promoting “prohibited forms of travel.” Zaman settled with Orbitz and the United lawsuit was dismissed.
