Amazon recalls Cupkin children’s cups due to elevated lead levels

A recall has been issued for more than 345,000 children’s cups due to excessive lead levels, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Soojimus is recalling its Cupkin Double-Walled Stainless Steel Children’s Cups, which were sold in various colors on Amazon and the Cupkin website from 2018 to earlier this year. Consumers are advised to stop using the cups and contact Soojimus for a refund. There have been no reported illnesses or injuries related to the recall. Cupkin states that the liquid in the cups is not exposed to lead due to their double-walled construction, and the exposure can only occur if the cup bottoms are mistreated. The recall was initiated by Cupkin after consumer feedback and additional testing. The company clarified that lead was not detected during the initial development of the products.

In response to the recall, Cupkin provided a message on their website stating that their manufacturing partner and two CPSC-accredited labs confirmed the absence of lead during the development and testing process. However, after receiving consumer feedback, Cupkin initiated the recall and took responsibility for the issue. Soojimus and Amazon will directly contact purchasers of the recalled cups, and consumers can request a refund by submitting photographs of the cups’ destruction and filling out a form on Cupkin’s website. Max Kang, one of the co-founders of Cupkin, expressed remorse for the situation and emphasized their commitment to resolving the issue and rebuilding. It is important to note that lead exposure can be harmful to children’s brain development, and no safe level of lead has been identified. Exposure can occur through various sources such as old paint, contaminated dust, and water passing through lead pipes.
