Amazon mandates corporate employees to relocate as part of their office return plan

Amazon is implementing its return-to-office policy, which requires employees to be present in the office three days a week. As part of this policy, the company is asking some corporate workers to relocate to different cities. While Amazon has confirmed that relocations are taking place, they have not provided specific details on the number of employees involved.

According to Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser, the company will offer relocation benefits to workers who are asked to move and will consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Glasser emphasizes the benefits of in-person collaboration and connections, stating that employees and surrounding businesses have noticed increased energy since returning to the office three days a week.

The decision to relocate workers represents an escalation of Amazon’s efforts to have employees return to the office. In February, the company introduced the three-day office policy, which was implemented in May. This policy led to protests from hundreds of corporate workers outside the company’s headquarters in Seattle.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy explained that the decision to bring workers back to the office was based on observations made during the pandemic. The senior leadership team analyzed employees’ performance and spoke with leaders from other companies, ultimately concluding that in-person engagement and collaboration were more effective.

While Amazon has confirmed the relocation process, they have not commented on reports that workers in smaller offices are being required to move to larger offices in major cities. Business Insider, citing internal messages, reported that employees who refuse to relocate near their teams’ main offices are being given the option to find a new job internally or leave the company through voluntary resignation.

It is worth noting that Amazon has recently cut 27,000 jobs, although it is unclear if these job cuts are related to the relocation process.
