Amazon Faces Investigation Launched by Bernie Sanders

Senator Bernie Sanders has announced that the Senate committee he chairs is launching an investigation into the working conditions at Amazon warehouses. This move comes as Sanders believes that Amazon is one of the most dangerous places to work in America. The Guardian reports that the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP) will be looking into these conditions. A letter from Sanders to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, obtained by The Washington Post, outlines some of the key areas the committee will be investigating. These areas include the underreporting of injury rates, worker turnover rates, productivity targets for employees, and adherence to federal and state safety recommendations.

Sanders expressed his concerns about Amazon’s pursuit of profits at any cost, which he believes has led to unsafe physical environments, excessive pressure to work at unsustainable rates, and inadequate medical attention for workers. This investigation is part of Sanders’ ongoing efforts to hold big corporations accountable, as he has initiated probes into companies like Starbucks and Moderna since becoming the committee chair. Despite Sanders’ claims, an Amazon spokesperson disagrees with the allegations and states that the company is committed to continual improvement. The spokesperson points out that recordable injuries across their US operations have decreased by 23% since 2019. Additionally, Sanders has invited Amazon workers to share their stories as part of the investigation.
