Alvin Bragg’s policies implicated as crime victim numbers reach new heights

Introducing the latest casualties of Alvin Bragg’s misguided decisions. First on the list is Scotty Enoe, a 46-year-old CVS employee from Brooklyn who was unfortunately taken into custody by the police after allegedly fatally stabbing a shoplifter during a brawl on Thursday morning. The second victim is Charles Brito, a 50-year-old vagrant with a staggering 14 shoplifting charges this year alone – a man who clearly had a knack for evading the law. Lastly, New York City itself suffers the consequences of Manhattan DA Bragg’s haphazard approach to enforcing the penal code. Shoplifting is not a priority for him, thus toothpaste and other products are now shielded behind plexiglass panels throughout the borough, while repeat offenders continue to sell stolen goods to bodegas and flea markets.

Of course, Bragg is not alone in his ridiculous mindset. He is merely the face of a progressive movement that dismisses petty crimes as inconveniences to be tolerated in the name of social justice. The logic seems to be that proactive law enforcement somehow leads to unfair outcomes, so they turn a blind eye to the issue. Unfortunately, this flawed ideology allows petty crime to fester and transform into something far more serious. What starts as a drug addict occasionally swiping pints of ice cream ends up as an epidemic of shoplifting that drives reputable retailers out of business and forces those that remain to raise their prices. And inevitably, it results in violence, as we witnessed at the CVS store on Broadway and 49th Street early Thursday morning. The details are somewhat vague, as they often are, but it appears that Brito attempted to leave the store with stolen Gatorade, Enoe intervened, and a fight broke out, ultimately leading to Brito’s untimely demise. Enoe now faces a murder charge.

Many questions arise from this unfortunate incident. Why is it being categorized as murder rather than self-defense? Is this the beginning of a disturbing trend in our city, with similar incidents occurring every month? If so, what is causing this shift? These are important questions that demand answers. The truth is, ever since progressive lawmakers altered New York State’s penal law in 2018, violence in public spaces has skyrocketed. It should come as no surprise that a violent response eventually unfolds. But here’s another question: how many shoplifting arrests does it take for a thief to be viewed not only as a threat to merchandise but also to the fabric of our society? Is 14 arrests enough? Sadly, Charles Brito’s fate has already been sealed, but he was just one of many.

Furthermore, is shoplifting truly a “crime of poverty” as the progressive elite claims, or does it primarily victimize the poor? Enoe is undoubtedly a victim himself – a victim of Bragg’s leniency and also of Brito’s predatory behavior. Perhaps the thief did not deserve to die over a couple of bottles of energy drinks, but neither he nor his alleged killer should have been thrust into a fatal confrontation in the first place. Although these encounters may seem isolated, they are ultimately fueled by progressive policies that make them inevitable. If not at 49th Street and Broadway at 12:30 in the morning, then somewhere else, at some other time, involving different individuals – often those who are impoverished and non-white. Alvin Bragg must take a hard look at himself and reassess his decisions.
