Encountering Gearbox Problems in a Brand-New Tata Altroz

Purchasing a brand-new car is a momentous occasion. However, when that new car experiences mechanical issues, owners may feel a sense of disappointment. Meet Ranjeet Soni from Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, who had every reason to be proud of his Tata Altroz until he drove just 110 km. Unfortunately for Soni, his new car turned out to be more of a headache than a joyride.

Altroz Owner Faces Gearbox Malfunction

Soni purchased his Tata Motors Altroz in Lucknow, expecting smooth sailing for miles to come. However, within 110 km of its inaugural journey, the manual gearbox suddenly ceased to function. Imagine the frustration of being stranded in a technically inoperable car barely 10% into its suggested break-in period.

In a YouTube video by Prateek Singh, Ranjeet Soni demonstrates the gearbox issue in his brand-new Tata Altroz. Despite slotting the gear into the correct positions, it consistently falls back to the center column, selecting the wrong gears. Essentially, Soni cannot engage reverse as it slips into 4th gear. Even when attempting to shift into 1st gear, it ends up in 3rd gear. Resorting to manually pushing the car in reverse defeats the purpose of car ownership altogether. Soni directly blames the Tata Motors dealership in Lucknow for this predicament.

Sharing his concerns, Soni expresses his dissatisfaction with encountering major problems within the initial hours of ownership. He can’t help but wonder what the future holds for his car. Disappointed by Tata Motors’ inadequate response, he now questions the viability of his car’s ownership.

The Underlying Cause

Upon inspection of the video, the faulty operation of the 5-speed gearbox becomes apparent. In models like the Altroz, the gear selector is not directly connected to the gearbox. Instead, two gear shift cables regulate the transmission, directing the gears to engage.

There are two cables: one for the 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears, and another for the 2nd, 4th, and reverse gears. While the springs in the mechanism appear to be functioning, they fail to hold their position in the selected gear. This could potentially indicate a problem with the gear selector cables or linkages. Consequently, the gear shift linkage bushings might be faulty as well.

Considering the car is brand new, these issues might arise due to improper assembly rather than inherent faults. However, such problems should have been addressed and rectified prior to delivery. Unfortunately, Tata Motors seems to be gaining a negative reputation for providing subpar after-sales service quality, despite producing some of the best cars in India.
