Although AI Has Not Yet Produced a Masterpiece, It Holds Potential to Amaze after Exhausting Our Limitless Potential | Bidisha Mamata

Authors Mona Awad and Paul Tremblay have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of using their books to enhance its generative capabilities without their consent. It appears that writers’ works are being treated as anonymous compost, feeding the artificial intelligence machine to produce virtual, existential, and nutritionless chipolatas that could potentially replace human creativity.

I decided to test one of these AI-generated story sites by entering a story idea and clicking the “generate” button. The resulting narrative included lines like, “We went on a school trip to the moon, our first-ever visit. The other students were either at home or on other planets.” And: “The vampire stood before me, peering into my eyes. A cold sensation traveled down to my toes.”

It may seem amusing, but AI is actively collecting and digesting various aspects of our online presence, from photographs to Instagram captions. AI is scanning, scraping, ripping, absorbing, mining, and assimilating our digital existence. This language of consumption, colonization, and metabolization is rapidly shaping AI’s capabilities. Soon, our casually written messages will be used to mimic everyday speech, eradicating any robotic tendencies and improving dialogue. In the meantime, I’ll be working on my masterpiece titled “Moon Vampires.”

Dispute over planting has stirred up controversy in Salisbury city center. The council proposes replacing individual hanging baskets with pockets of sustainable planting to attract butterflies and enhance biodiversity. However, Conservative councillor Eleanor Wills took to Twitter, dismissing this move as “ideological nonsense” pushed by a “leftwing cabal.”

This disagreement is like a trivial quarrel over potted plants. Not every proposal should be politicized or turned into a power struggle. Nobody will sneak in during the night to cut down hanging baskets as some radical act. Instead, why not step away from social media and appreciate any form of greenery that is available?

Pop performers have recently faced a barrage of projectiles from their audiences. Pink received a bag containing someone’s mother’s ashes, Lil Nas X was hit with a sex toy, and Kelsea Ballerini was struck by a bracelet. Some attribute this behavior to post-pandemic enthusiasm and the erosion of social etiquette. However, I believe it traces back to the rise of online culture, fueled by campaigns like Trump and Brexit, which normalized aggression, abuse, and intimidation that eventually spilled into the real world.

Regardless of the gender of the perpetrators, their actions and justifications mirror those of violent and abusive individuals. Bebe Rexha ended up with a black eye after a man threw a phone at her face, while Ava Max was attacked onstage by a man who lunged at her. Invading a performer’s personal space, disregarding their boundaries, disrupting their work, and claiming it was an act of love or connection is a tactic commonly used by harassers and abusers. Why would any so-called “fan” engage in such behavior?
