Altercation at Los Padrinos Results in Injury to Young Person and Staff Member

An adolescent inmate who was held at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey has been returned to the facility after successfully escaping during a violent altercation with detention staff members. This incident caused a significant response from law enforcement agencies, including the Downey Police Department, Downey Fire Department, South Gate Police Department, and deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Lakewood station.

The Los Angeles County Probation Department, responsible for managing the facility, stated that the escaped youth was swiftly apprehended by Probation Special Enforcement Operations officers. A spokesperson emphasized that there were no severe injuries reported among the youth or staff members, and everyone involved is currently undergoing medical evaluations.

Following the altercation, officers and deputies conducted thorough searches of nearby neighborhoods and the Los Amigos Golf Course due to information received that one of the juveniles had fled the facility during the brawl. County Supervisor Janice Hahn expressed gratitude to the law enforcement personnel for their prompt response and assured the community that all the youths have been accounted for. Supervisor Hahn also called for a thorough investigation into the incident and demanded reassurances that such an event will not recur.

This month, Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall reopened its doors, welcoming 274 pre-disposition youths who were previously housed at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall in Sylmar and Central Juvenile Hall in Boyle Heights. The 26-acre campus in Downey now houses these individuals.
