Almost Half of Florida Under State of Emergency

Tropical Storm Idalia, currently forming off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is projected to intensify into a hurricane by Tuesday and pose a threat to the United States. According to ABC News, the storm had sustained winds of 40mph on Sunday, located 95 miles away from Cozumel, Mexico, and moving northeast at 3mph. Meteorologists predict that the storm will gain speed and strength on Monday and Tuesday as it heads north into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to make landfall on Wednesday morning in northern Florida as a category 2 hurricane, with winds reaching at least 96mph. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has responded by declaring a state of emergency for 33 counties along the Gulf Coast, which accounts for nearly half of the state. ABC News reports that some areas may experience 4 to 6 inches of rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods. The storm will then proceed to move into Georgia and the Carolinas later in the week.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Franklin, the second hurricane of the 2023 Atlantic season following July’s Hurricane Don, is forecasted to reach category 3 status on Monday, as reported by the New York Times. Currently located in the Caribbean, Franklin was categorized as a hurricane on Saturday and reached category 2 status on Sunday, with sustained winds of 100mph. By Monday, it is expected to reach sustained winds of 111mph or higher, making it a major storm. As of 5pm Sunday, the hurricane was situated 320 miles north-northeast of Grand Turk Island and 535 miles southwest of Bermuda. It was moving north-northwest at a speed of 8mph. WESH reports that swells could impact Bermuda by Sunday evening, followed by a north-northeastward turn. Predictions indicate that Franklin will eventually become a category 4 hurricane with winds exceeding 130mph, posing a risk of life-threatening surf and rip currents along the US East Coast.
