A drone strike conducted by the U.S.-led coalition in northern Syria on Friday resulted in the death of an individual with ties to the Islamic State, as reported by a paramedic group and an opposition war monitor. The Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, stated that the man was riding a motorcycle when he was killed, and a passerby was also injured in the incident. The targeted individual was identified as a militant linked to the Islamic State group by Rami Abdurrahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights based in the UK. The attack took place on the road connecting al-Bab and Bazaa.
For years, the U.S.-led coalition has been focused on targeting militants associated with al-Qaida and the Islamic State.
In separate news, the United Nations has called on Saudi authorities to release two women who have been imprisoned for expressing criticisms of the Salman regime on Twitter. This development highlights ongoing concerns surrounding freedom of speech and human rights in Saudi Arabia.
Moving onto another topic, a shooting incident inside a mosque in Lebanon resulted in one fatality and five injuries, according to a security official. The situation is currently under investigation.
It is worth noting that in May, the U.S. military launched an investigation into reports of civilian casualties caused by a strike in northwest Syria while targeting a senior al-Qaida leader.
Within Syria, the presence of at least 900 U.S. forces, alongside undisclosed numbers of contractors, working alongside the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces plays a crucial role in preventing the resurgence of the Islamic State. These forces aim to maintain stability in the region, particularly after the group’s defeat in Syria in March 2019. However, sleeper cells of the Islamic State continue to pose a threat, carrying out deadly attacks against Syrian government forces, SDF members, and local officials.
In a separate incident, a tragic accident on the road between Homs and Palmyra resulted in the death of 16 individuals, including women and children. The bodies have been transported to hospitals in the province of Homs, according to the state news agency SANA.
