All of Us Face a Direct Threat: A New Manifestation of a Historical Madness

Mao Zedong’s transformation of Chinese society through violence, coercion, and propaganda made him one of the most powerful dictators of the last century. His approach, known as Maoism, poses a direct threat to American values and freedom.

During a recent encounter at a hotel, a Chinese American woman expressed her concern over the rise of a new Maoism in America. Having escaped China 30 years ago after witnessing the destruction caused by Mao’s dictatorship, she feared that the same nightmare would unfold in her new country.

Her emotional plea resonated with me, as someone who has extensively studied Mao and the Chinese Communist regime. While the extreme violence of Maoism has not materialized in America, the tactics of psychological coercion and propaganda have infiltrated our institutions, including universities, media, and government.

Another survivor of Communist China, Xi Van Fleet, highlighted the dangers of Maoism in her fight against a school board’s adoption of propaganda-based transgender policies. These firsthand accounts have deepened my understanding of the emerging threat.

I consulted other trusted individuals on this matter, and Dimon Liu, a renowned human rights activist and survivor of China, emphasized the role of identity politics in the new American Maoism. By weaponizing class divisions through critical class theory, Maoist elements designate and ostracize specific classes, mirroring the tactics employed in China.

Ben Domenech, editor of “The Transom,” further expanded on the nature of Maoism in America. He described it as a “distributed tyranny” that does not rely on a central authority but on motivated masses. The drive for radicalization, the absence of a logical endpoint, and the destruction of institutions are all characteristic of this new Maoism with American characteristics.

It is imperative that we recognize and confront this threat to our freedom. The stories shared by survivors like Xi Van Fleet and the Chinese American woman should serve as a wake-up call. We must not allow tyranny to take hold in America, for if it does, where can we turn for freedom?
