Alienation of members and voters: Labour party under scrutiny

On the day Jamie Driscoll declared his candidacy as an independent for north-east mayor, a significant number of Hexham constituency members resigned from the Labour party. This is a clear indication of disillusionment among Labour voters, a sentiment that has been reaffirmed since my own resignation. This trend of resignations is widespread across the north-east region (18 July).

As a dedicated Labour member for 31 years, I held various leadership positions within the local constituency. It was with great sadness that I made the decision to resign from the party last week. The treatment of Driscoll, being unjustly excluded from the list of potential Labour candidates for north-east mayor, was the tipping point for me. I cannot continue to be affiliated with a party that lacks democratic principles in candidate selection and the removal of elected representatives.

Looking ahead, I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to campaign for Jamie in the upcoming mayoral election next spring. His track record demonstrates his capability to be the strongest candidate and perform exceptionally well in the role.

Jamie Driscoll accurately acknowledges the disillusionment felt by Labour voters. We have a mayor who possesses impressive success, principles, and popularity. Despite his cross-party collaboration in delivering a favorable devolution deal, factionalism within the party forced him to part ways.

Under Tony Blair, New Labour mistakenly assumed that the “red wall” would remain loyal, leading to consequences such as Brexit and the 2019 election outcome. Today, the Labour party is taking its members for granted, assuming that even when their voices are ignored, they will continue to provide support and campaign. Unfortunately, under Keir Starmer’s leadership, the party presents nothing but empty promises and the continuation of austerity policies, which inflict suffering and despair.
