Since assuming the role of Alibaba Group’s CEO in May 2015, it has been my tradition to send regular letters to all of you. Often, these letters symbolize significant organizational changes. Today is no different, except this time I am sharing a personal change of great importance.
I am pleased to inform you that our transition to the “1+6+N” model, as announced, has been progressing according to plan. During our recent earnings announcement, we introduced the board of directors for each of the six major business groups, all of which are now fully operational. Additionally, we unveiled plans for several notable transactions, including the spin-off and independent listing of Cloud Intelligence Group, IPOs for Cainiao Smart Logistics and Freshippo, and external capital raising for AIDC. Alibaba is embarking on a new and promising future.
As we are well aware, the development of core technologies like cloud computing, big data, and AI is profoundly transforming our society and holds tremendous strategic significance. Given the critical stage of Cloud Intelligence Group’s spin-off plans and the need for separation between the board and management team, it is appropriate for me to focus my full attention and time on this business. Thus, after careful consideration, the Alibaba board of directors has accepted my plan to transition from the roles of Chairman and CEO of Alibaba Group to exclusively concentrate on my position as Chairman and CEO of Cloud Intelligence Group, effective September 10th, 2023. In my place, Joseph C. Tsai will assume the role of Chairman, and Eddie Yongming Wu will become the Chief Executive Officer. Both Joe and Eddie, as co-founders and partners of the company, have been instrumental in its success and possess invaluable experience. I have complete confidence that their leadership will propel Alibaba to new heights.
This change marks a new phase, not only for the company but also for me personally. Time has flown, and I am now celebrating my 16th year at Alibaba Group. When I was appointed CEO and Chairman, it surpassed my wildest dreams. The fact that I have been able to dedicate myself fully to these roles for so long is a testament to the trust, support, encouragement, and patience of all of you. I am eternally grateful for this. Over the past 16 years, I have witnessed the astonishing growth of Alibaba and its numerous achievements, which have impacted people’s lives, facilitated digital transformation in businesses, and made remarkable contributions to society. Together, we have faced the challenges posed by the pandemic and the uncertainties of the macro environment, emerging resilient and stronger than ever. The friendships and connections formed during this journey are more valuable and meaningful to me than anything else.
Throughout our 24-year history, we have embraced self-reinvention on numerous occasions. Today, we stand united at a new starting point, eager to unlock fresh growth through self-transformation. I have unwavering faith that each of you will continue to support Joe, Eddie, and the new senior management team. I hope you all find the best path and platform for your personal fulfillment, as this will not only benefit the company and society but also help you discover your true potential.
