Every smartphone, television, and radio in the US received an automated alert on Wednesday at 2:18pm ET as part of a nationwide test for an emergency alert system. The message ‘This is a test’ was displayed on screens as the federal government evaluated and maintained its alert system to ensure its efficiency in the event of a real emergency. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Federal Communication Commission (FCC) were responsible for conducting the drill, during which a code was sent to smartphones across the country. Additionally, all televisions and radios in the US received alerts.
Leading up to the drill, conspiracy theorists flooded the internet with claims that the test would unleash a zombie apocalypse by activating nanoparticles within the Covid-19 vaccine. However, following the alarm, numerous posts on social media platform reassured the public that the predicted doomsday did not occur.
The nationwide test was first conducted in 2012 and has been utilized over 84,000 times across the US to alert the public about missing children, natural disasters, and other emergency situations. Nonetheless, conspiracy theorists seized the opportunity to spread their unfounded theories. One user on platform X wrote a viral post advising others to turn off their cell phones on October 4th to avoid the alleged activation of the Marburg virus in vaccinated individuals. Similar messages were posted by several other members of platform X, prompting some users to take precautionary measures by turning off their smartphones, radios, and televisions.
The test consisted of two parts: evaluating the capabilities of the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system and the Emergency Alert System (EAS). WEA messages were sent to all consumer cell phones, while the EAS portion was transmitted to radios and televisions. Wireless phone users in the US who had their phones turned on received a message stating: ‘THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. The purpose is to maintain and improve alert and warning capabilities at various levels. No action is necessary.’ The incoming messages were accompanied by a sound and vibration. Phones set to Spanish displayed the message: ‘ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción.’ This was the seventh nationwide EAS test, lasting approximately one minute. Participation in the test included radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wireline video providers according to FEMA.
People watching cable television broadcasts or listening to the radio heard and saw a one-minute message that stated: ‘This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States. This is only a test. No action is required by the public.’ Federal law mandates that these systems be tested at least once every three years. The previous nationwide test took place on August 11, 2021.
