Alen Stajcic, Former Coach of Filipinas, Joins Australian Club Perth Glory

Alen Stajcic, the former head coach of the Philippine women’s team, and Sofia Harrison celebrated their success at the FIFA Women’s World Cup match between New Zealand and the Philippines. After leading the Filipinas to their first-ever World Cup appearance, Stajcic has now been officially named the new coach of the Australian men’s club Perth Glory.

The announcement made by the A-League club confirms the rumors that had been circulating before the Women’s World Cup about Stajcic taking over Perth once his duties with the Filipinas were complete. It was reported in June that the Glory were interested in Stajcic due to their financial and on-pitch struggles.

“I believe there is an incredible opportunity to establish Glory as an Australian football giant, and that vision is shared by everyone at the club,” Stajcic stated on the club’s website. He expressed his confidence in the groundwork laid out over the past year to pave the way for success and expressed his excitement to contribute to that process.

Stajcic’s decision to move on from his role with the Philippine women’s team comes after achieving remarkable milestones. The Filipinas made it to the semifinals of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which allowed them to qualify for the Women’s World Cup, a feat unparalleled by any other national team. Under Stajcic’s leadership, they also won the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship, secured bronze at the Vietnam Southeast Asian Games, and climbed to the 46th position in the world rankings.

Stajcic’s contract with the Philippines concluded with a 6-0 loss to Norway in the final group stage match. However, the team’s performance in the Women’s World Cup included a memorable 1-0 victory over New Zealand.
