Novak Djokovic made a successful return to the United States tennis scene after a two-year absence.

The Serbian champion breezed past his second-round opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who was forced to retire due to injury after losing the first set 6-4 at the Cincinnati Open on Wednesday.

Since the 2021 U.S. Open final, Djokovic had not competed in the United States and was previously denied entry into the country because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19.

Although he wasn’t at his best during the 46 minutes of play, Djokovic managed to fend off break points at 1-1 and serve his way out of trouble.

Davidovich Fokina took a medical timeout to address a lower back issue while trailing 3-4, but upon his return, his movement was limited, and he was ultimately broken at love.
