Albany Sets the Stage for New Film Festival, Empowering Black Creatives

The Palace Theatre in Albany has been the catalyst for a new film festival called the Renaissance Black Film Festival. Kevin Johnson, the theater’s executive director, was inspired by the success of Max’s “The Gilded Age” and recognized the need to highlight local filmmakers and attract filmmakers from outside the area.

The festival, debuting June 22-25 in downtown Albany, will showcase the work of Black film artists from around the world. It will feature a curated selection of short and feature-length films chosen by a panel, considering factors such as story, technique, and available resources.

In addition to film screenings, the festival will include industry panels with special guests like Morris Chestnut and Gail Bean, networking events, and after parties. The event aims to provide aspiring filmmakers with a firsthand experience of the industry and inspire local creatives.

The festival will conclude with a highlighted feature film and an awards ceremony, offering cash prizes. The organizers, Harris and Johnson, believe that the festival can support and contribute to the growth of the Capital Region’s film industry.

Tickets for the festival can be purchased online, including day passes for individual venues or both, exclusive feature and panel passes, and an all-access festival pass. The schedule is available on the festival’s website.

With the support of sponsors, including the Renaissance Albany Hotel and Film Albany, the organizers envision the Renaissance Black Film Festival becoming an annual event, expanding over the next three to five years.

Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate and discover the talents of Black filmmakers while contributing to the development of the local film industry. Join the Renaissance Black Film Festival in Albany!
