Antonio Brown, the former NFL star and current owner of the Albany Empire, finds himself entangled in a potential class-action lawsuit filed by some of the players and coaches of the team, as reported by the Times Union of Albany. After the Empire’s final game against the Orlando Predators on June 9, Empire coach Moe Leggett claimed that the staff and players were initially paid. However, they soon discovered that the checks had been reversed and withdrawn from their bank accounts, according to the Times Union.
The players are seeking payment of at least $500, owed to them from that particular game. Leggett expressed his frustration, stating that he wanted to trust Brown but now feels that trust has deteriorated. In an interview with News10, Leggett elaborated on the situation, calling it unfortunate and emphasizing the importance of paying the owed amounts promptly to move forward without any hard feelings. He stressed that such delays directly affect the livelihoods of the individuals involved.
Another report from the Times Union cited an email from team accountant Alex Gunaris, who explained that missing equipment was the reason for the delayed paychecks. Allegedly, the Empire’s gear, including football helmets, shoulder pads, jerseys, and other equipment, was not returned after they were removed from the league. Once a list of players who returned the equipment is compiled, payments will be reissued.
Brown’s tenure as the Empire’s owner has been marred by controversy since he assumed ownership in April. The NAL expelled Brown and the Empire earlier this month, with Brown owing the league $21,000. This situation has left players and staff in a difficult position, as they have no other means to secure the money they rightfully deserve. Former Empire wide receiver Fabian Guerra supported the decision to sue Brown, suggesting that his actions were done primarily for social media attention and to promote his music. Guerra stated that trust in Brown has dissipated and believes it will be challenging for him to secure future deals due to his character.
Leggett is currently in search of legal representation to pursue the case. Lineman Brandon Thorpe expressed his disappointment, describing how Brown’s actions have harmed the team to a point of no return.
