Tragic Incident: Pleasure Boat Fire Claims Two Lives, Injures Three Others
In a devastating incident on Saturday, a 35-foot pleasure boat caught fire at a fuel dock in Alamitos Bay, situated on the eastern side of Long Beach. The blaze resulted in the death of two women and left two men and a woman hospitalized with severe burns.
The alarming incident took place at approximately 5:17 p.m. at the 200 block of Marina Drive. Firefighter Jake Heflin, from the Long Beach Fire Department, reported the incident to the City News Service.
All individuals involved in the incident, including the deceased and injured, were in their 60s, according to Heflin.
Due to its proximity to a fire station, firefighters swiftly responded to the distress call. The fire, which emitted thick smoke and a strong odor throughout the east side of Long Beach, could also be seen from the marina area. Eyewitnesses near the dock reported hearing an explosion.
Long Beach firefighters, with assistance from the Orange County Fire Authority, took immediate action to extinguish the highly intense fire, both on land and in the water. Remarkably, no firefighters sustained injuries during the operation.
As a precautionary measure to prevent any potential environmental damage, the remains of the boat were towed to an isolation dock to prevent fuel leakage, as confirmed by Heflin.
The investigation into this fatal incident will include determining whether the boat was fueling or had just completed fueling when the fire erupted. It is known that fueling a boat can be hazardous if fumes are not properly dissipated before starting the engine.
