Alabama Police Intervene to Contain Noisy Protesters Disrupting Kirk Cameron’s Library Event

Police in Huntsville, Alabama successfully prevented a crowd of protestors from disrupting a story hour featuring actor-author Kirk Cameron and former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines on Saturday, in an effort organized by Moms for Liberty. The event took place at the Madison Public Library and was part of the “See You at the Library” series of book readings on August 5. Some protestors outside the library held signs with messages like “Ban hate, not books” and “Ban bigots.”

Inside the library, there was a large crowd of adults, parents, and children who were able to enjoy the book reading without major disruptions. The event began with Cameron expressing gratitude to attendees for participating in an event that he described as “wholesome” and “faith-filled.” They recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang “God Bless America” while holding hands over their hearts.

Prior to the event, the library had initially canceled it, but it was rescheduled after First Liberty Institute, a law firm, threatened legal action over a perceived violation of their client’s civil rights. The library system then agreed to host the event with a cap on the number of attendees to ensure public safety, with both the Madison Police and Fire Marshal present to manage any logistical needs.

According to Brave Books, Cameron’s publisher, there were 225 attendees at the event, which was the agreed maximum capacity for the room. The local police reported approximately 100 protestors outside the library. Brave Books also sought further comment from the local police departments regarding the situation.

The “See You at the Library” event series was inspired by Kirk Cameron and organized by his book publisher. Its goal is to bring together Americans from different backgrounds to public libraries, where they can enjoy book readings centered on faith, family, and patriotism. The series includes events in more than 300 libraries across 46 states. Interested individuals can find events in their area through an available map.

Speaking to Fox News Digital in a phone interview, Cameron acknowledged the concerns expressed by conservatives and Christians about their representation in American culture. However, he expressed optimism about the opportunity for them to have a voice and presence through events like these.

Other event organizers shared their excitement about connecting with like-minded community members during local book readings. Lauren Mauk, president of Mommy’s Haven Maternity Home in Lowell, Indiana, and a mother of two, emphasized the importance of teaching biblical and patriotic principles to children from a young age. Mauk praised Brave Books for their publication of books that effectively communicate these principles in an entertaining and trustworthy manner that aligns with their values.

Overall, the story hour event featuring Kirk Cameron and Riley Gaines faced initial cancellation, potential legal action, and protests. However, through the efforts of the police, it ultimately proceeded with a significant turnout and a positive atmosphere. The “See You at the Library” series continues to promote unity and the celebration of faith, family, and country in libraries nationwide.
