The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) achieved a major milestone in artificial intelligence (AI) technology last month, announcing the successful flight of a Valkyrie jet controlled by AI. The three-hour flight took place on July 25 at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. The XQ-58A Valkyrie utilized AI algorithms developed by AFRL and trained with machine learning (ML) techniques to navigate the skies.
The flight demonstrated the potential for AI to execute advanced air-to-air and air-to-surface maneuvers, marking a significant breakthrough in autonomous flight. Colonel Tucker Hamilton, DAF AI Test and Operations chief, emphasized the successful completion of a tactically relevant challenge problem, although specific details were not disclosed.
Prior to this achievement, AI had already been utilized to fly a tactical aircraft based on the F-16 fighter jet for over 17 hours earlier this year. As Brig. Gen. Scott Cain, AFRL commander, highlighted, AI will play a crucial role in future warfare, providing rapid decision-making capabilities and enhancing operational awareness.
The AFRL’s AI and machine intelligence capabilities continue to evolve rapidly, underscoring the importance of maintaining pace in government, academia, and industry partnerships.
