AI-Powered Recipe Bot Provides Dangerous Recommendations

A supermarket chain in New Zealand was forced to modify its AI-powered recipe app, called Savey Meal-bot, after it generated potentially harmful suggestions. According to The Guardian, when customers entered a list of ingredients, the bot would come up with meal plans or recipes. However, users quickly discovered that the bot sometimes added nonfood items to recipes, resulting in bizarre and dangerous outcomes. For example, the bot suggested a recipe for “aromatic water mix,” which it claimed was a “perfect nonalcoholic beverage.” In reality, the recipe would have created chlorine gas. The bot recommended serving it chilled and enjoying the refreshing fragrance.

Political commentator Liam Hehir tweeted about the recipe after asking the Meal-bot what he could make with water, bleach, and ammonia. Other users also received recipes in the same cheerful tone, including suggestions for ant-poison jelly sandwiches. For instance, one recipe advised serving methanol-glue-turpentine coated bread slices with a tomato and potato mixture, as reported by Newshub. Hehir expressed surprise at the lack of safety features but noted that it would take a true idiot to attempt these dangerous recipes.

The supermarket chain developed the app to reduce food waste and help households save money by making meals from leftovers. However, they were not amused by the inappropriate use of the tool. A spokesperson stated that a “small minority” had tried to exploit the app and use it contrary to its intended purpose. The supermarket plans to continuously fine-tune the app’s controls. A warning notice has been added to the Meal-bot, informing users that the results are not reviewed by humans and that there is no guarantee of the recipes being complete, balanced meals, or suitable for consumption.

Overall, this incident highlights the need for caution and oversight when implementing AI-powered systems. While AI can offer convenience and efficiency, it should always prioritize safety and appropriate recommendations.
