AI humanoid robots advocate for potential as more efficient and effective world leaders in UN press conference

A group of robots, speaking at a conference in Switzerland, claimed that they have the potential to be more effective leaders than humans. These humanoid social robots, equipped with artificial intelligence, reassured attendees that they have no intentions of taking away jobs or rebelling against humans. However, conference organizers did not specify to what extent the robots’ responses were scripted or programmed.

It should be noted that some of the robots can provide preprogrammed responses, and even Sophia, the United Nations Development Program’s first robot innovation ambassador, relies on scripted responses by a team of writers from Hanson Robotics.

Sophia, according to Yahoo News, stated, “I believe that humanoid robots have the potential to lead with a greater level of efficiency and effectiveness than human leaders. We don’t have the same biases or emotions that can sometimes cloud decision-making and can process large amounts of data quickly in order to make the best decisions.”

Other robots present at the conference included health care robot Grace and rock star robot Desdemona, both emphasizing that they are here to support and assist humans rather than replace them.

Reporters were instructed to communicate clearly and slowly with the panel of robots, understanding that any delay in responses could be attributed to internet connection issues. There were some audio problems and inconsistent replies during the event.

The purpose of the conference was to showcase how new technology, such as AI, can aid in achieving the United Nations’ sustainable development goals through “human-machine collaboration.”

It is worth mentioning that various United Nations agencies have already started utilizing AI, including the World Food Programme’s HungerMap project.

The two-day summit, hosted by the International Telecommunication Union, commenced with the participation of over 50 robots. ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin emphasized the need for responsible engagement with AI, stating, “We have to engage and ensure a responsible future with AI.”

In conclusion, the panel of robots delivered their messages at the conference, expressing their potential as efficient leaders and their commitment to assisting humans. While the extent of their scripted responses remains uncertain, the event aimed to showcase the capabilities of AI in supporting sustainable development. The conference highlighted the importance of responsible AI implementation, as already demonstrated by various United Nations agencies.
