AI Chatbots Provide Solace to Those Who Are Grieving

Several start-ups are using artificial intelligence (AI) to allow people to stay in touch with loved ones after their death. One of these companies, DeepBrain AI, offers a program called “Rememory,” which creates a digital replica of a deceased person using video footage. The company ensures that the content generated is authentic, avoiding the creation of new sentences or phrases that the person never uttered in their lifetime. However, DeepBrain AI acknowledges that this niche business is not a significant growth area for them.

Another company, StoryFile, uses actor William Shatner to promote its site, which captures the essence of individuals and utilizes AI tools. Meanwhile, entrepreneur Pratik Desai caused controversy with his suggestion that it would soon be possible to create autonomous avatars of deceased individuals. He clarified that he was not trying to exploit people’s grief but acknowledged the ethical concerns surrounding such a project.

Replika, a company founded by Russian engineer Eugenia Kyuda, creates personalized conversational robots, but it insists that it is not aimed at recreating lost loved ones. Somnium Space, based in London, wants to create virtual clones of individuals while they are still alive so that they can exist in a parallel universe after death.

Despite the technological advancements enabling avatars to say things that were never uttered in real life, there are ethical considerations. While some see interacting with an AI version of a deceased loved one as a way to find closure, others express concerns about losing control over what the avatar says. Researchers are investigating this topic further, studying the potential benefits and risks associated with virtual contact with the deceased.
