AI: A Helpful Tool for Planning Your Next International Flight, with Some Limitations

  • The use of AI in travel planning is becoming more common as its capabilities continue to advance.
  • However, it’s important to note that not all AI software is created equal, and some may provide incorrect or misleading information.
  • GuideGeek, on the other hand, has proven to be reliable in finding the most affordable and efficient international flights.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing various industries worldwide, and it’s now making travel easier for people in certain areas.

Although AI may appear to be the ultimate solution for all travel-related issues, experts advise against relying entirely on software to plan your entire trip. This approach could lead to overcrowded or illogical itineraries for your family, as previously reported by Insider.

Despite these challenges, AI can be particularly useful for one of the most complex aspects of travel planning: international flights.

Certain AI bots, like ChatGPT, lack real-time search capabilities and internet browsing, preventing them from booking or finding flights.

However, another AI-powered app called GuideGeek has received praise from travel influencers for its impressive functionalities, especially when it comes to international flights.

While GuideGeek doesn’t directly book flights, it allows users to search for flights and offers itinerary planning tools. These tools take into account budget, the number of travelers, and travel dates. Additionally, GuideGeek provides recommendations for sightseeing and dining experiences.

In our tests, GuideGeek helped us plan a flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, Indonesia, from June 15, 2024, to June 29, 2024. It recommended a roundtrip flight with the lowest cost of $1,159.34 and a cumulative travel time of 44 hours and 50 minutes.

A comparison using Google Flights showed a lowest-round trip cost of $1,389 and a cumulative travel time of 51 hours and 55 minutes. The best-round trip cost was $1,414 with a total travel time of 44 hours and 50 minutes.

On Expedia, the same flight had a similar cost of $1,395 roundtrip but a lengthy travel time exceeding 70 hours.

GuideGeek also performed well in another international search for a flight from San Francisco International Airport to London Heathrow Airport. It offered slightly cheaper flights compared to Google Flights and Expedia, along with faster travel times.

However, let’s consider a more challenging trip, such as one from Syracuse, New York, to Syracuse, Italy. How does GuideGeek fare in such a search?

For a spring break trip in 2024, GuideGeek took a relatively long time to present options. Its “best” rated round trip flight cost $1,510, while its cheapest suggestion cost $1,296.58. In this case, it closely matched, if not slightly lagged behind, its competitors. Expedia offered the cheapest round trip for $1,172, and Google Flights provided the cheapest flight for $1,268.

In a test to find flights from Hays Regional Airport in Kansas to Barra Airport in Scotland, neither Expedia nor GuideGeek could find any suitable options for a Christmas trip from December 17, 2023, to December 30, 2023. Only Google Flights was able to plan this multi-plane round trip, costing nearly $7,000.

Another important consideration is that cheap international travel often comes at the expense of comfort. While all the tools we tested took travel time into account when suggesting the “best” routes, they did not prioritize finding the cheapest routes. Additionally, GuideGeek and other planning sites may not provide detailed information on additional costs, such as baggage fees or seat upgrades.

Overall, GuideGeek proves to be a helpful tool for planning flights between major international destinations. However, for more complex itineraries, it may be best to rely on manual searching.
