After rehab start, the Mets confront a dilemma involving Jose Quintana

The New York Mets are faced with a decision regarding their pitcher, Jose Quintana, following a short fourth rehab start. Previously, Quintana had pitched four innings and threw 47 pitches, but in Friday’s game with Triple-A Syracuse, he only lasted 2 ²/₃ innings. Despite allowing two runs on four hits and three walks, Quintana threw 64 pitches against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team, an affiliate of the Yankees. Quintana has yet to pitch five innings, which may prevent him from joining the rotation in the next game. The original hope was for Quintana to return in early July, but it is possible that he will have to make a fifth rehab start before his club debut. When he does return from his bone-graft surgery in March, the Mets may consider implementing a six-man rotation, as they have been providing extra rest for their starters. A solid start from David Peterson on Tuesday has given the team the option of carrying an extra starter if they choose to do so. Manager Buck Showalter hinted at this possibility but remained hesitant to confirm it. The Mets have been cautious with their pitching rotation, led by veterans Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, both 78 years old, along with Carlos Carrasco, 36, and Kodai Senga, who pitched weekly in Japan. Injuries and underperformance have prevented a six-man rotation thus far. Peterson was previously sent to Triple-A in mid-May due to his high ERA but impressed in his recent performance against the Brewers. If he continues to pitch well and Quintana performs upon his return, the Mets will have to consider how much value they place on a six-man rotation. Despite struggling recently, Jeff McNeil had a strong game with two RBI doubles. Showalter has not yet considered giving him the same break that helped Daniel Vogelbach. Tommy Pham had a homerun and his third consecutive multi-hit game, batting .363 in his past 26 games. Starling Marte was absent from the starting lineup due to a decline in performance, but he remains confident in his abilities.
