The AFP news agency of France has taken legal action against billionaire Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), filing a copyright case to demand payment for news shared on the platform. The agency seeks fair compensation and has requested data from X to estimate the amount. This move follows a 2019 European Union law that allows payments under “neighboring rights” for shared content (source: Barron’s).

While Google and Meta’s Facebook have agreed to pay some French media outlets, AFP has accused X of refusing to discuss neighboring rights. As a strong advocate for the adoption of neighboring rights for the press, AFP is determined to ensure fair distribution of the value generated by the sharing of news content. The agency will continue to use legal means to achieve this goal.

This copyright case is part of a global effort to hold tech firms accountable for paying for news on platforms like X, Facebook, and Google. While there have been wins in France, big tech companies have resisted paying for news in other regions. Meta recently blocked users of Facebook and Instagram in Canada from seeing posts from news organizations due to a new law requiring compensation for content, and Google has threatened similar action. These tech giants have also opposed similar proposals in Australia.
