Affordable Monthly Sleeping Pods for San Francisco Tech Workers – Just $700!

In the San Francisco Bay Area, tech workers facing skyrocketing rents are choosing to live in inexpensive “sleeping pods” costing $700 per month. These pods are 4-foot-tall, semi-open boxes that can accommodate a single twin mattress, and they provide shared bathrooms and common areas.

Instead of renting expensive studio apartments in downtown San Francisco for around $3,000 per month, employees of Silicon Valley startups are opting for the more affordable sleeping pods.

Christian Lewis, the founder of Spellcraft AI Founder, moved to the Bay Area from Illinois to grow his AI company. He expressed satisfaction with his new and cozy living space, stating, “The pod is the size of a twin bed, so it’s not very large but it gets the job done. You just need a place to sleep.”

Lewis shared images of the pod and the communal areas in the Mint Plaza facility on social media.

According to Lewis, his experience in San Francisco has been overwhelmingly positive. He has met incredibly smart people and is excited about the opportunities available in the area. He emphasized that the reason he came to San Francisco and stays there is because he wants to be surrounded by brilliant minds.

These sleeping pods, provided by Brownstone, are constructed with steel and wood and have a blackout curtain at one end. Brownstone rents out pods in Palo Alto for $800 per month, in San Jose for $650 per month, and in Bakersfield for $500 per month, according to their CEO, James Stallworth.

Brownstone is now expanding its operations in the SoMa section of San Francisco, where one-bedroom and studio apartment rentals range from $2,700 to $3,400 per month, based on Zillow’s data.

A recent report by Zillow indicated that rent prices in San Francisco have been declining, likely due to increasing crime rates and many companies relocating from the city.
