AEW Troubled With Yet Another Backstage Issue as Cash Wheeler Faces Arrest

Despite the record-breaking success of AEW’s All In event, the company continues to face challenges behind the scenes.

Cash Wheeler, one-half of the AEW tag team champions, was arrested on Friday morning on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm. He entered a plea of not guilty on August 3, and his arrest was filed on August 18, following the issuance of an arrest warrant on July 28.

AEW has released a public statement acknowledging the charge and stating that Wheeler is cooperating with local authorities.

Despite his legal troubles, Wheeler is scheduled to defend the AEW Tag Team Championships with his partner Dax Harwood against the Young Bucks at the upcoming All In pay-per-view in Wembley Stadium. The event has already surpassed the attendance record set by WWE SummerSlam 1992, with over 80,000 tickets sold.

Wheeler’s arrest is just the latest in a series of backstage issues for AEW. The company’s locker room has become divided, mirroring the rivalries seen onscreen. AEW President Tony Khan even had to create a separate show to keep certain individuals apart due to their untenable relationship. Tensions have continued to escalate, as seen at the recent AEW Collision event where CM Punk mocked Hangman Adam Page and FTR’s association with him.

Punk’s influence in AEW has been evident, and it remains to be seen if backstage politics will affect the outcome of the tag team title match between FTR and the Young Bucks. Given the animosity involved, it is possible that Punk may threaten to leave if the Young Bucks are booked to win the titles over his friends.
