Newly-filed accounts in the UK reveal the first full year of operation of Aer Lingus’ services from Manchester. Aer Lingus, a part of International Airlines Group, established a base in Manchester to make the most of assets and capitalize on the collapse of Thomas Cook in 2019.
In an interview with the Irish Independent, Aer Lingus CEO Lynne Embleton stated, “We’ve made significant progress in the Manchester-North American market.” She emphasized the importance of providing direct services to customers, which not only benefits the airline and passengers but also raises awareness of the Aer Lingus brand.
Previously, Aer Lingus held a 3% share of the transatlantic market from Manchester, with all traffic routed through Dublin. However, this year, the airline expects to capture approximately 20% of the transatlantic market from Manchester.
Aer Lingus’ accounts for the UK division show that operating expenditure amounted to €81.6m last year, including €45m for fuel, €17.3m for engineering and lease costs, and €15.2m for employee expenses. The revenue generated by the UK arm amounted to €85.5m from passenger revenue and €1m from cargo.
As a group, Aer Lingus recorded a €45m profit in 2022, with revenue rising to €1.8bn from €367m in 2021. The airline plans to launch a new route between Dublin and Denver next summer and resume its service between Dublin and Minneapolis-St Paul. It also restarted its service to Hartford, Connecticut after a two-year hiatus.
