Adults Age 60 and Older Now Advised by CDC to Get RSV Vaccine

Americans aged 60 and above can now receive a single dose of the RSV vaccine, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday. This endorsement, made by CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, comes after an advisory panel recommended the same last week. With the FDA’s approval in May, there are now two RSV vaccines available: one from Pfizer and another from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The CDC anticipates that these vaccines will be accessible by the upcoming fall season, providing protection against severe RSV illness amidst the circulation of multiple respiratory infections. RSV is a seasonal virus, with its peak during the winter months. The vaccine will be available before the start of the next RSV season. Both Pfizer and GSK presented data to the CDC panel, demonstrating the effectiveness of a single dose throughout one or even two RSV seasons. Notably, a second dose did not provide any additional efficacy. While RSV typically causes mild symptoms in healthy adults and older children, older adults with underlying medical conditions face a higher risk of severe illness and hospitalization. In the US, RSV leads to between 60,000 and 160,000 hospitalizations and 6,000 to 13,000 deaths annually among adults aged 65 and above. Following the vaccines’ release, accessibility will be crucial for their successful uptake. GSK has announced a price range of $200 to $295 for their RSV shot, while Pfizer mentioned a potential price range of $180 to $270. However, these prices are subject to change.
