Adidas Selling an Increased Quantity of Yeezys

Adidas is faced with a surplus of Yeezys and is taking a smart and creative approach to clear them out after severing ties with Kanye West (now known as Ye) due to his controversial statements. According to CNN, the second wave of Yeezy stock will be available for sale online on Wednesday, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to organizations that combat discrimination and hate, including racism and antisemitism. This release differs from the previous one in May, as Yeezys will be available on various retailers’ websites, not just Adidas’. The money from purchasers will support the Anti-Defamation League, the Philonise & Keeta Floyd Institute for Social Change (founded by George Floyd’s brother), Robert Kraft’s Foundation to Combat Antisemitism, and other selected organizations. The first round of donations from May amounted to $9.3 million.

Of course, there is an underlying financial motive for Adidas. The company was left with $1.3 billion worth of Yeezy merchandise after cutting ties with Ye, and selling these items is crucial to prevent significant losses. As Quartz states, simply selling the shoes without acknowledging the controversy would be seen as hypocritical, removing the logo would be deceitful, and destroying them would be wasteful. The May sale helped reduce potential inventory losses by 20%. The Anti-Defamation League appreciates the sales as a thoughtful and caring resolution, as it turns the negative consequences of Ye’s actions into something that benefits society and the people he has harmed.
