Adam Schiff’s Censuring Rejected by the House

Twenty Republicans joined forces with Democrats on Wednesday to halt an effort to censure Rep. Adam Schiff of California. The motion to table the issue was approved by a vote of 225-196, as reported by The Hill. Interestingly, there were five Democrats and two Republicans who voted present, indicating a split within party lines. The resolution to censure Schiff was initiated by freshman member Rep. Anna Paulina Luna from Florida, who is known for her alignment with Donald Trump. The purpose of the censure was to reprimand Schiff for his support of claims that Trump colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign, as stated by USA Today. Additionally, the resolution included a $16 million fine that would cover half the expenses of Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation into these allegations.

Luna voiced her disapproval of Schiff on Tuesday, accusing him of abusing his position, deceiving the American people, and wasting taxpayer money. Schiff, who is currently running for Democratic Senate, has become a target for Republicans due to his involvement in Trump’s first impeachment. In January, Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy prevented Schiff from returning to the Intelligence Committee, a position he held when the Democrats controlled the House. Schiff responded to the censure attempt, claiming that it was nothing more than a distraction from Trump’s legal troubles and an attempt to please the former president. He further argued that he was targeted by Republicans because he was considered Trump’s most effective adversary. This is not the first time that Schiff has faced a censure attempt, as a similar effort in 2019 also failed to gain traction.
