Adam Sandler Reflects on Working with Bob Barker on “Happy Gilmore”

In a heartfelt X (formerly Twitter) post on Saturday, Adam Sandler fondly remembered the late TV legend Bob Barker, who made a hilarious cameo in Sandler’s 1996 sports comedy “Happy Gilmore.” Sandler described Barker as “The man. The myth. The best,” expressing how enjoyable it was to spend time with him, talk to him, laugh with him, and even get beat up by him. Sandler also acknowledged that Barker’s presence will be missed by everyone and sent his love to Barker’s family.

The tribute refers to a memorable moment in the film, where Barker, playing himself, teams up with Sandler’s character, Happy Gilmore, for the fictional Pepsi Pro-Am tournament. As their performance in the tournament worsens, Barker and Gilmore end up in a brawl, exchanging blows and ultimately engaging in an all-out fight. In the heat of the moment, Gilmore even insults Barker, saying “The price is wrong, b–ch,” before Barker retaliates with a kick to the face.

Barker passed away on August 26 at the age of 99 due to natural causes at his Hollywood Hills home. As an iconic game show host, animal rights activist, and an 18-time Daytime Emmy award-winner, Barker had a significant impact on the game show genre. Adam Sharp, president and CEO of the National Academy of Television Art and Sciences, praised Barker’s contribution in defining the game show format and his enthusiasm for animal welfare. Barker’s absence will be deeply felt by the Emmy community.

Starting his career in 1956 as the host of CBS’ “Truth or Consequences,” Barker eventually became synonymous with “The Price is Right,” leading the series for over three decades. He retired in 2007, passing the hosting baton to comedian Drew Carey.
