Adam Kinzinger Criticizes Ron DeSantis’ Refusal to Meet with Biden in Florida as ‘Outrageous’

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) criticized Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision not to meet with President Joe Biden in the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia, calling it “absolutely outrageous.” Kinzinger pointed out that while DeSantis expressed logistical concerns over Biden’s visit to survey hurricane damage, it is more likely that the governor is concerned about the optics of meeting with the president.

In a CNN appearance, Kinzinger told John Berman that there is only a small chance that logistical issues are the reason behind DeSantis’ decision, and that the optics play a larger role. He mentioned that a decade ago, politics did not affect disaster response as it does now, and criticized DeSantis for putting his political campaign above the benefit to Florida.

Biden had previously stated that he and DeSantis were in communication to a level where there should be a direct line of contact between them. However, after Biden announced that he was set to meet with DeSantis, the governor’s office cited security preparations that would disrupt recovery efforts as the reason for not meeting.

This marks a departure from past post-disaster visits, as DeSantis had met with Biden following previous incidents like Hurricane Ian and the Surfside Condo collapse. Kinzinger emphasized the importance of putting politics aside and criticized DeSantis for not prioritizing the needs of Florida, especially considering that the federal government will be providing financial assistance.

When asked for a message to DeSantis, Biden assured that “we’re going to take care of Florida.” The president received praise from several Florida officials, including Sen. Rick Scott, for the support offered by the federal government.

In conclusion, Kinzinger’s criticism of DeSantis’ decision not to meet with Biden after Hurricane Idalia highlights the political environment’s influence on disaster response. He emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the needs of the state over political campaigns and calls for a rejection of such behavior.
