The son of two esteemed Spanish film stars has reportedly been arrested in Thailand for the alleged murder and dismemberment of a man. The victim’s body parts were found scattered around the well-known tourist island of Koh Phangan, famous for its vibrant dance parties.
Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, a 29-year-old chef with a YouTube channel, was taken into custody after confessing to the heinous crime. According to local police cited by Reuters, Sancho led authorities to various locations on the island where bagged pieces of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, 44, were discovered and confirmed through DNA testing.
Sancho initially reported Arrieta as missing, but it was soon revealed that he was the perpetrator of the crime. The BBC reported that Sancho and Arrieta had been in a year-long romantic relationship, and the murder occurred following an argument between the two in a hotel room.
Surveillance footage captured Sancho and Arrieta riding a motorcycle together a day before the body parts were found. Sancho was also seen purchasing a knife, plastic bags, and cleansing fluid, according to Thai PBS.
According to a police source, Sancho claimed that he punched Arrieta, causing him to hit his head on a bathtub and lose consciousness. Sancho then dismembered the body to dispose of it.
While the exact motive for the killing remains unclear, Surat Thani provincial police commander Saranyu Chamnanrat suggested that it was likely related to their personal relationship.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombia has confirmed that an investigation into Arrieta’s death is underway.
