Actress Helen Baxendale, David Schwimmer’s British wife on ‘Friends,’ still remembered by show director who criticizes her lack of humor

According to the Daily Mail, the director of the beloved 90’s sitcom “Friends” didn’t hold back when criticizing one of the show’s cast members. Director James Burrow openly stated that UK actress Helen Baxendale, who played Emily Waltham for 14 episodes, lacked comedic talent and couldn’t connect with the rest of the cast. Burrow emphasized that in sitcoms and romantic comedies, humor is just as important as chemistry. Baxendale joined the iconic show during its fourth season, portraying the girlfriend and later fiancée of Ross, played by David Schwimmer. However, despite her integral role, the director felt that Baxendale’s pleasant demeanor fell short of the comedic requirements. Burrow believed that any new girlfriend for Ross needed to share the same level of humor as Rachel, portrayed by Jennifer Aniston. He used the analogy that Schwimmer had no one to bounce laughs off, comparing it to clapping with one hand. Additionally, the director mentioned that unsuccessful story arcs often led to the departure of certain individuals, even if they were day players. Baxendale ultimately left the show after two seasons due to her pregnancy and returned to the UK. In a 2012 interview with the Sunday Mirror, Baxendale described her time on “Friends” as a strange and surreal experience. She clarified that although the show was titled “Friends,” the cast were professionals who had been working together for years. Baxendale also revealed that her fame from the show made her easily recognizable in public, which she perceived as a gilded prison. She expressed her relief at leaving the United States and returning to Britain, as fame did not align with her desired lifestyle. Ultimately, she has no regrets about her decision.
