According to scientific research, this is the ultimate sandwich

The sandwich holds a special place in American culture, being just slightly older than the country itself. While it was not invented by an American, it has become a beloved institution in the United States. A recent survey of 2,000 US residents revealed a surprising level of agreement on the best ingredients for a sandwich.

According to the survey, the perfect sandwich should have slices of tomato (54% agreed), cheddar cheese (39% agreed), and Black Forest ham (39% agreed). Interestingly, while ketchup is America’s favorite condiment (with a 61% approval rating), very few people would recommend adding it to a cold ham sandwich.

But the survey uncovered more than just ingredient preferences. A majority of Americans (58%) also prefer their sandwiches toasted. This preference was reflected in the survey’s images, which showed a BLT sandwich made with two slices of multigrain bread – a choice preferred by approximately 33% of respondents.

The survey, commissioned by lunchmeat provider Buddig and conducted by market research company OnePoll, also revealed that two-thirds of Americans (67%) claimed they could survive on sandwiches alone for a week. Additionally, onions (54% agreement) and cucumber (51% agreement) were the top vegetable toppings, while barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, and honey mustard were the most favored condiments (all receiving a 58% approval rating).

When it comes to cheese, cheddar was the most preferred (39% approval), followed by Swiss and American (both with a 36% approval rating). Surprisingly, the Alpine hard Swiss Gruyère cheese received only 1% approval.

In terms of bread, respondents showed a preference for whole wheat (37%), sourdough (36%), and multigrain (33%). The survey also found that 67% of respondents believed sandwiches to be a good economic value, providing tasty and affordable protein options. With rising food prices, 42% of Americans expressed concerns about cutting costs, making sandwiches an attractive and cost-saving meal option.

Americans also revealed that they crave a sandwich about four times a week. However, there were some differences in preferences. 29% of respondents preferred simpler toppings, considering themselves “minimalist” sandwich eaters, while 27% identified as “savory lovers.” Additionally, 15% reported having a sweet tooth when it came to sandwiches.

Overall, sandwiches offer a convenient and affordable option for Americans with busy schedules. According to Tom Buddig, Executive Vice President of Marketing at Buddig, the flexibility of sandwiches accommodates different eating times, as people today have varying schedules and circumstances. While many Americans enjoy sandwiches at home or in public spaces like parks, the survey revealed that the beach is the preferred location for sandwich enjoyment (38% preference).

In conclusion, the survey showcases the American people’s shared preferences for sandwich ingredients, preparations, and eating habits. Sandwiches provide a versatile and satisfying meal option that resonates with a wide range of individuals, reflecting the diverse tastes and preferences of the American population.
