According to Liberal Californians, the Fentanyl Crisis is being Exacerbated by ‘Extreme Left’ Policies.

Alexandra Capelouto’s tragic demise is just one heartbreaking story of the many lives lost to fentanyl, a deadly drug that has become a national crisis, affecting people of all walks of life. The problem began in the mid-1990s when pharmaceutical companies falsely touted opioids as revolutionary pills for dealing with chronic pain. The crackdown on prescription opioids led many addicts to the streets in search of heroin. By the mid-2010s, dealers had started adulterating other drugs with fentanyl, resulting in staggering numbers of overdoses. The drug caused three-quarters of roughly 110,000 overdose deaths in 2022, killing 2,000 Americans every week. The crisis has taken a toll on liberal states, creating deep rifts in the Democratic Party over how best to address the issue.

While some moderate state lawmakers want to hold dealers accountable, they are continually blocked by “extreme, far-left” Democrats, claims Alexandra’s grieving father, Matt Capelouto. In San Francisco, fatal overdoses have gone up by 41% during the first three months of this year, with the vast majority of deaths caused by fentanyl. Despite the high overdose rate, the city’s mayor is investing $18.5 million to open three “safe consumption” sites, which critics say only keep addicts hooked instead of treating them. This approach has left several liberal parents infuriated, as they’ve seen their loved ones’ lives destroyed to addiction while allowing drug dealers to go unpunished. These parents are frustrated with California’s drug laws, which they say keep victims in bondage to addiction.

Tanya Tilghman is one such parent who has been forced to rethink her liberal views after her son, Roman Vardanega, became hooked on fentanyl. Roman’s addiction started during high school, from which he graduated to other drugs like cocaine, heroin, and meth. Fentanyl became unavoidable for him after returning to San Francisco, where he lived on the streets. This drug intensified his erratic behavior and even prompted Tanya to take a restraining order. After going to the Tenderloin Center, the city’s safe consumption site, she left disappointed after seeing no one interested in getting better. Rather, the staff only seemed to encourage drug-taking, and the center’s failure was evident when it closed down in December 2022 after costing $12 million. Tanya is furious with Mayor Breed’s decision to open three additional wellness hubs while the Tenderloin Center remains a failure. She believes that “enabling people to do drugs and then having them leave the facility high is a danger to the community and a danger to themselves.”

Jacqui Berlinn is in a similar position as Tanya. Her son Corey is also an addict living on the streets of San Francisco. She is confused about why the city keeps repeating the same mistakes while drug overdoses have skyrocketed. The Tenderloin Center has been a one-stop-shop for drugs, and it’s evident that the wellness hubs’ opening will lead to similar outcomes.
