Accommodation costs at Edinburgh Festival Fringe reach an all-time high

The City of Edinburgh Council has raised concerns about the negative effects of an excessive number of short-term lets on housing shortages and anti-social behavior.

The average fees for licenses range from £214 to £434, but for properties capable of accommodating at least 21 people, the annual fee can reach up to £5,869.

Since October 2022, holiday let owners in Edinburgh have faced significant challenges in obtaining planning permission, effectively hampering their businesses. Fiona Campbell, the chief executive of the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers, points out that those who manage to secure licenses are passing on the associated costs to holidaymakers.

Ms. Campbell accuses the City of Edinburgh Council of jeopardizing the tourism sector and engaging in “economic suicide.”

She further explains, “We feel overwhelmed by the Scottish Government. The culmination of these policies will only result in higher costs for your next holiday in Scotland.”

Holiday let owners have resorted to legal action against Edinburgh council’s planning and licensing policies. Although their case against the short-term licensing scheme was deemed unlawful, leading to amendments in the requirements, the scheme is still being implemented.

In addition, the holiday let owners have requested judicial reviews of licensing schemes in Dundee, Glasgow, Argyll and Bute, arguing that these schemes are also unlawful.

Edinburgh council leader Cammy Day has previously stated that the council is “committed to ensuring the whole city benefits from our thriving visitor economy, but it has to be managed and sustainable.” He believes that implementing new controls is a crucial step in the right direction.
